You're right about the gas problem. Probably the worst mistake they made on this bikt (in my mind), is the lack of a resettable trip odometer. You can always wait until it goes on reserve (something I dread) and even then, you've only got about 15 miles to find a gas station.
One trick that I've used a couple of times is to write the mileage at the last fill-up on the smallest size post-it note and stick it somewhere you can see it (in my case, on the inside of the windshield just above the headlight).
